The Black 14
John Griffin
What the stand cost: A sure NFL talent whose shot the incident took — so he spent fifty years fighting for reconciliation instead.
John arrived from California in 1969 carrying the air of the antiwar movement. On the field he looked like a future NFL star. The incident took that shot away.
Rather than let it consume him, John became a leading force for reconciliation between the Black 14 and the LDS Church — work that helped bring the group its long-overdue NCAA recognition in 2023 and College Football Hall of Fame honors in 2024.
